FAQ advice for parents of musically talented high school students wanting a career in music

Due to the amount of high school students I work with in clinics, camps, festivals etc, I often have parents ask me about how to best prepare their talented son or daughter for a successful career in music. It is impossible to prescribe any one thing that will guarantee success in the challenging music business. So much depends on varying degrees of talent, luck, work ethic, discipline, opportunities, support, desire, focus, personal skills, willingness to consider other aspects and styles of music etc.

I receieved an email today, and thought this might be a good opportunity to provide some feedback for other parents in the same boat. Below are parts of my response. Sensitive aspects such as the student's name have been changed/redacted. I hope this helps many of the parents out there that have musically talented children.

Thanks for the email...I understand your question about NAME'S career quite well. I had the same question when I was about that age. Firstly, I would recommend reading an article I wrote about this for Saxophone Journal. It's available on my website (www.davecamwell.com) under DOWNLOADS, and then ARTICLES. The title is "so you want to be a professional saxophonist", but you could replace "saxophonist" with any other instrument quite easily.

In regards to NAME not wanting to teach and just perform, the truth is NAME will likely have to do some. However, it does not have to be at the middle school or high school level. Almost all pro jazzers (and musicians in general) teach somewhat, unless they land one of the coveted full time orchestra gigs, or tour constantly. Knowing NAME a little bit, I think a good option would be for him to pursue playing, but also have a side industry - in this situation, developing his skills to be a recording engineer as well would be an excellent and fulfilling idea in my opinion.

In terms of schooling, i think you're right. If you simply want to perform, NAME should go to school in a major city where he can build a professional network before "arriving" in a scene where it takes time to build up. I would suggest schools in NYC, Boston, Chicago, or LA. Others like Miami, Phili, Dallas/Denton, Atlanta etc could also be possibilities. I think NAME needs to be a school where he does not come in as the best. In fact, it would be most helpful if there were 5-10 musicians "ahead of him" in line as this is often the fastest way to learn. The real world will certainly be like this, but without much of the help and support of faculty and fellow students.

There is no reason why NAME can't develop a website now; there are many good template sites such as mine - dynamod. Quite inexpensive as well. Other advice - grades and SAT/ACT still really matter. The higher the grades, the easier it is to get scholarships which can be a big deal when you are going out of state.

In terms of developing a portfolio, it is likely worth the cost to hire some pros and have a recording session in a real recording studio. You will also likely want to start planning on a live audition for 3-5 schools next Fall or Spring.

I hope this is helpful. A bit of planning now will pay off tremendously.

Jazz Festival 2012

If it's the last Thursday and Friday of January, it is the Simpson College Jazz Festival, now in its 7th year. This year has gone pretty well, largely due to our great student volunteers and our great judges - Eric Richards, James Bunte, and John Kizilarmut. Here are some pictures:

Like penguins to the sea, and band directors to the MidWest convention in Chicago, I go to Cherokee Iowa every January with jazz friends Jim Oatts, John Kizilarmut and a few others to work with six or seven bands in the area. It was great fun yesterday, and we heard some talented performers! For those of you wondering about the obvious question, yes, one band did indeed play a version of Cherokee!

Happy New Years everyone! 2011 has been a fantastic year, and 2012 is already looking to be even more exciting. I continue to be very thankful to get to do what I do for a living, and for the myriad of talented people that surround me.

Below are three clips from 2011's last project, Bach's BWV 1060. The special thing about this recording for me is that I get to show off my talented wife, Jillian! I think she sounds great, and Ron Albrecht and Mary Pshonik did a fabulous job as well.

December Recording Studio Fun

This past Wednesday and Thursday, Jillian, Ron Albrecht, and myself were in the studio to record BWV 1060. We had a great time, and I'm looking forward to being back there next week for some other music, Bach level-mixing and adding a continuo part with our cellist friend Mary Pshonik.

I had a great time this weekend performing with Steve Lippia and Orchestra Iowa. He is a tremendous singer and does a superb job with the Great American Song Book. I played lead alto in a strong sax section with friends Chris Merz, Peter and Lynn Hart, and Jeff Schaffer. Good times laying down the swing on some classic tunes!

Oasis Quartet just completed a fabulous week in Iowa. We visited several high schools, as well as the University of Iowa, all leading up to our big concert as part of the Civic Music Association. Many great memories were made and we are very thankful for the terrific audience on Saturday.

I am now ready for some rest, as most of the week I was fighting a terrible cold that was incredibly fatiguing, and even took away my voice for a few days. This coming week should restore some normalcy.

Civic Music Week

As the saying goes, all good things come to an end. In this case, an awesome thing is ending on Monday - my work/vacation/sabbatical-project based in the new house in Hope, Idaho.

It has been beyond fantastic to be here, and a real treat to be around family so much.

However, it will be nice to be back in Iowa, and we are certainly scheduled to be busy there!

We have had a great time playing and teaching in Oregon and just played our final concert tonight. It has been nice to reconnect with old friends, such as Bob Moore and his wife Vera, Rhett Bender and Jodi, Craig Bender and Tom Bergeron. It was also great to see the new buildings at UO. It was quite meaningful to perform and teach with Oasis at the place that provided me with so much opportunity, starting in 2002.

Working Hard!

...well, perhaps not this hard! Still, I'm in Calgary this week working on my sabbatical project, Oasis music for our Oregon tour next week, and lots of clinics and performances at Calgary high schools. I am doing between 4-5 a day from Tuesday-Friday, so it has been fun, but hectic.

One possible highlight this week - my sister has apparently scored me into a party of Calgary flames literati from the radio and some of the more reputable blogs. I listen and follow (and watch) all of these people regularly, so this could be a very cool time on Friday night for some great discussion (and beer!) about the Flames.

highly trained pilot in a Cessna Skyhawk. It was a great time, and I even

got to fly (under intense supervision) for a few minutes!

University of Idaho

I had a great time at the University of Idaho this past couple of days. I performed a recital, and was accompanied by the fabulous Rajung Yang. Vanessa Sielert joined us both for the last piece on the program, the Bach Double Concerto BWV 1043 that I arranged. Everyone could not have been kinder, or more gracious and I had a great time.

I was hoping to have some video of the event, but the Zoom inexplicably froze up, so all of the recital was lost. Here are some pictures, at least.

Here are some highlights:

...Dave Camwell's second solo recording is a beautiful and powerful recording. It is tremendously well performed and each of the works selected provide a great opportunity for all saxophonists to hear wonderful arrangements of the works of Bach for the saxophone. Camwell is to be commended for his beautiful tone and excellent musicianship on this recording.

...the Oasis Quartet does an extraordinary job of blending as a chamber ensemble during the course of this beautiful work (Glass)...Highly technical and virtuosic, each of the members of the quartet easily demonstrate the high levels of ability and artistry each of them have on their instruments while seamlessly moving between the various sections of the work (Escaich)...During the work (Gotkovsky) each of the members of the quartet again demonstrate their abilities to perform with beautiful blend, tone, and rhythmic accuracy demonstrated at the highest level. Rustic vs High-Tech

It has been a great August so far, and I am feeling the recharging juices thoroughly flowing after 6 years of graduate school immediately followed by 6 years of college teaching. School at SC starts tomorrow and I do have some mixed feelings about not being there. However, I know that my replacements for the semester, Jim Oatts, and the sultan of smooth - Stephen Page - will do an awesome job in my place.

It's been an interesting juxtaposition between the overwhelming beauty of rustic Idaho and my high-tech practicing tools...let me first state that I've never practiced in a garage that sounds better! Secondly, my practice materials include my iPad (I am forgoing printed music as much as possible now and using the great App ForScore), iPad music stand (thank you Gigeasy), blue-tooth pedals (thank you AirTurn), laptop (to play-a-long with various MP3s), and headphones. With all this stuff I feel a little like Ivan Drago in Rocky IV! However, I assure you, I am taking no steroids or other artificial saxophone enhancers, with the exception of my awesome new gold right and left thumb rests from Randy Jones of Tenor Madness!

Mount Rainier Search and Rescue (excerpts)

Here is another Xplorium Ensemble video from our time in Taiwan last month. The piece is Mount Rainier Search and Rescue, and follows the story of two hikers and the rescue attempts to save them. Steve Lias wrote this piece and came with us for the premiere in Taiwan.

Update September 28, 2011: After hearing the complete performance video, Scott Richards (the surviving climber from the Mount Rainier incident on which this piece is based) wrote this message to composer Steve Lias:

Stephen,

You did an excellent job at putting this tragedy into music. Each time I listen to the piece I feel as though I am back high up on the mountain with the wind and snow. I can feel the events unfolding as they did at 13000 ft. on Rainier. Your use of each instrument to create the feelings that I remember while on the side of that mountain with Peter was very accurate. The way you put each moment as they unfolded into music is amazing. The performing group did a wonderful job. They are top notch for sure. I am honored that you choose this event to put to music. Peter was extremely passionate about music and played the piano. I know that he would be very proud of it also.

Thank you for sending me this great email. If I can ever be of anymore assistance please give me a call. Let me know if the piece makes its way to the east coast as I would love to see it preformed or if any other events happen with the music.

Humbled at the Instrument Petting Zoo

This afternoon TeamCamwell went to the Sandpoint Music Festival to see an orchestra playing the music of Disney. We thought our two boys would love it, and I would say that it was a 70/30 mixed success. Harrison certainly did enjoy dancing up a storm to the music along with a surprising amount of other small kids. Mosh pit for Mahler?! The concert was well programmed for maximum pleb appeal...it's not like they were playing Bruckner or Brahms and the kiddies couldn't handel the complexity. During a rare and fleeting moment of toddler calm, I caught myself daydreaming briefly about this scenario:

Harrison - "What? But Daddy, this is a symphonic theme, not one suitable for a concerto!!!"*

One of the interesting pre-concert activities (in addition to "name that 16th-century Italian art song composer", "Pin the tail on Hildegard von Bingen", and "bobbing for assistant conductors" was an instrumental petting zoo. While Harrison was quite disappointed there was not an elephant (yes, we had explained to him what to expect, apparently to no avail...) there were many instruments to try out. I saw trumpets, trombones (steer clear of that career path Harry!), a drum set (just like the Wall Street Journal - not in my house!), and excitingly, a saxophone!

I thought I would give it a quick try, but was surprised that I couldn't make a sound on it! I checked out the reed and it was the worst, most warped, busted, and totally unplayable reed I may have ever seen. After trying to adjust it unsuccessfully, we moved on, although after ten paces, I heard it being played! I spun around and there was a 3 year old making a not great, but definitely audible sound! What has my career come to when I'm outplayed by a todder?!

After a wonderful decade together, I am selling my awesome Guardala tenor mouthpiece via Saxquest. It's a terrific mouthpiece, but I'm now playing a really cool mouthpiece designed/altered by James Bunte. Here is the link if you're interested in the Guardala. From local news in Chaiyi City! Xplorium!!! (Skip to 5:30 mark)

Here's the breakdown: This is Chia-Yi local news and has been posted by city government (on their official website and on YouTube). Xplorium's report is at 5'30'' click. Interviews with Ming-Hui Kuo and Nathan Nabb are included. They interviewed three people from the audiences. The first lady came to Chia-yi from Taipei, just for our performance. The last one said he just had to be there for this sax quartet and percussion combination. All three said it was really worth it to be there for our performance. So the title news report for us is "American team Xplorium's excellent concert for their first time ever outdoor performance".

This post was written in the wee hours of the morning, thanks to some delayed jetlag...another member of Oasis had similar insomnia as well last night! Making lemonade out of lemons, here are some more pictures from the trip.

Taiwan Wrap-up

After 29 hour of travel, I returned home last night after fabulous week in Taiwan with Oasis Quartet and a group of percussionists, pianists, and conductor. Together we formed the Xplorium Chamber Ensemble.

We performed Krasch (Anders Nillson), a new version of Camille Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals, and two new works written specifically for us by composers Steve Lias (who came with us on the trip) and Mark Engebretson. We also played three latin jazz tunes arranged by Steve Snyder. The musicianship was outstanding and many friendships were formed over our rehearsal time in Kentucky and this trip. We have several more exciting projects in the works for 2012 so stay tuned!

Last week, my wife surprised me with an early Father's Day present - an iPad2! This was fantastic, and I've enjoyed learning how to get the most out of it. While certain uses are simply "fun" (Angry Birds, Scrabble), there are other really productive possibilities with this great device. The most useful for music performance is the ability to not have to turn pages anymore! I have purchased the GigEasy iPad music stand mount and AirTurn Bluetooth pedals. To make it all go, I have hugely powerful app called ForScore, which lets me view my music through the screen. The pedals work great, and I've put some jazz fake books, jazz tunes, and classical saxophone repertoire on the iPad for future use. I've set it up to easily grab PDF files from my Dropbox so it's incredibly easy to access my library.

I will get to try it out in action next week at the Simpson College jazz camp. The evening concerts typically have us playing lead sheets of 1-3 pages, so it should be a low stress way to try out the new technology before playing Muczynski, Bach 1043, and other pieces at the University of Idaho in October. First up - Some Skunk Funk!

On a related note, there are certain apps that I don't know how I've lived without.
1. Flipboard: reading blogs and content from my google reader has never been more beautiful. It's like a magazine about all the things I'm interested in!
2. G-Whizz: A fantastic hub for all of my google happenings (gmail, caledendar, reader, youtube, chat, plus others such as Facebook etc.)
3. Opera: Next to Google chrome (which is curiously unavailable on iPad), the best browser out there in my opinion.

I also really like the two cameras (front and back) and how it is easy to use with Skype. I see myself traveling without a laptop this summer, and just bringing the iPad.

First he has exploited in his scathing corrosivity minimalist scores more radical later, has exercised its sensual tone and wraps around to accommodate the lyrical vein that runs through the compositions of the second phase of his career. It is this second phase that belongs to the String Quartet No. 3, here re-arranged for Saxophone Quartet OASIS, whose version accentuates the intimate melancholy, like the poignant drama. Of a very different tenor is the second track here proposed, Le Bal, the Frenchman Thierry Escaich. This is a piece aggressive, uncompromising, who spins away like a train, although some points of rest might have helped drive overall. The last piece is the composer Gotkovsky Ida, student, such as Glass, the legendary Nadia Boulanger. A "Super" Gig

I've had some memorable* gigs in my life, and tonight was another one. I was the guest soloist with the Woodward-Granger High School Jazz Band at their annual "Modern Music" year end concert. They have a theme each year, and tonight's was super heroes! I had been given a heads up about this, so I brought my Calgary Flames jersey with "Kiprusoff" on the back. I figured this would work as it's a cool jersey and Kiprusoff is certainly a super hero for the Flames! It was a very fun night - thanks to Bryan Lloyd and the warm students. I had an excellent time.

TeamCamwell is throwing a big party for Bryton's first birthday on Saturday and Jillian has put me in charge of handing out party favors. We are giving out sunflower and pumpkin seeds to the little ones, but are concerned that the seeds will prove too difficult for the guests to successfully raise to plant adulthood. So, here are some instructions that should take all the guess work out:

Pumpkin Seed Happiness

1. Plant your seed in the dirt to a depth that is beneficial to the seed, but not insulting to its work ethic.

2. Water your seeds daily. These are Monsanto seeds so please use ONLY Brita water.

3. Place the pot in direct sunlight from 6-11AM. Bring inside to protect from the most harmful rays of the sun, and then put outside again at exactly 3:35PM until 7PM. Do not deviate.

4. When the seedling has grown to 3-4 inches, take out of the pot and plant in a shady spot in your garden. If you get lazy and let it grow to 5 inches, all will have been in vain and your pumpkin seed will develop into a J.Lo plant in a forest of Celine Dions…

Sunflower Seed Happiness

1. Plant your sunflower seed in a pot with a combination of potting soil and top-soil, with a liberal sprinkling of horse and squirrel manure.

2. Water your seed with a spritz bottle filled with nothing but rose water. These are available for purchase at Bed Bath and Beyond and we would appreciate it if you purchased one directly from their website. At our party. Using our promo code that will help to fund our trip to Puerto Vallarta. Please do this now…

I stumbled upon this today, initially just as a user of Google Chrome. Wow - pretty powerful and beautiful video, perfect for a day like today.

Playing under pressure and pain

I've had a fun couple of days working with the powerhouse North high school band in Sioux City. Tonight's performance was an interesting one though. If you had been in the audience, I think (and hope) that you wouldn't have any idea, but I performed a lot of the concert in extreme pain. Like most things that go wrong for me, it was entirely my fault...

I felt dehydrated all day, and had a subway sandwich for lunch, and then came back to the hotel for a nap, where I battled a typical dehydration-esque headache that felt like a knife behind my right eye. I had a lot of water, and then felt a bit better and went to the performance hall at 4:30 for the sound check. My mistake was not getting food or water after the sound check at 6, and instead staying around the hall until the concert started at 7. I played one tune with the North high school 2nd band, and then began my set with the 1st band around 8.

The first two tunes (Blue Bossa, Hoofin') went fine, and then it was time for "the big feature", my version of Georgia on my Mind. Right as the tune began, I got a shattering pain behind my left eye and I truly thought I might have to stop. I made it through the first half and congratulated my arranging skills for having someone else solo for a blissful 32 bars before i come back in...

When I started up again, I thought to myself that it's a good thing i know Georgia by memory, as it helped to keep my eyes closed somewhat. I got to the cadenza, and played a little ACDC, and then the entire Bach prelude (in a jazz style) from the first cello suite before ending up on the high D to end the tune. The audience seemed to really like it, and after my bows, I crashed on a couch in the hallway while the band played two more tunes. I then finished the night playing on Wind Machine.

The moral of this story - take care of your body before major energy sapping experiences such as live performance! You'd think i'd know this by now, but in truth, this has never happened to me before!

Again - MANY thanks to Kevin Massey for inviting me to play. He runs a great program and his band sounds fantastic. Let's do it again sometime - i promise to be fed and watered properly...

I guess I am officially a professor when I am listed by Simpson College as a keynote speaker at their annual research symposium. All classes are cancelled on Thursday so that students can present juried research. As I won the faculty research award last year, I am presenting at 2:15 in Lekberg Hall. Here is the schedule.

Weekend in Wisconsin

I just returned to Iowa from a trip to the Eau Claire Jazz Festival in Wisconsin with the SC Jazz Ensemble. We had a great time, played well, and ate some authentic Italian cuisine at a little place called the Olive Garden.

Outside of the SC performance, the highlights for me were performances by Bobby Sanabria and Eric Marienthal. I have long been a big fan of Eric's, but had never heard him live. I was so incredibly impressed. I felt like a rank amateur after hearing him play - many "ous" words come to mind, such as stupendous, fabulous etc....The concert became a huge dance party complete with conga line! A great trip!

Due to the overwhelming response of my previous "Dave's Faves", I've decided to provide an update to what I'm currently listening, reading and watching.

What I'm reading: The Hunger Games

Any book that has a correlation to the most dangerous game (I grew up in a very rough part of the UK...) is okay by me. This book is fantastic, and like all of the greatest literary gems (Lord of the Rings, Flashman, Adrian Mole, the Odyssey, most Margaret Atwood novels, the Nancy Drew series) is comprised of several books. This is the first of three, and the movie version is already in pre-production. The hot topic (source - Tiger Beat) is currently who will play the part of protagonist Katniss Everdeen? Kristen Stewart of the Twilight series is often mentioned, as is nine-year-old acting sensation Dakota Fanning. I would also suggest that Gwenyth Paltrow, Tina Fey, and Reba McEntire also be considered.

What I'm watching: The Adjustment Bureau

This is a terrific movie! It's nice to see Matt Damon stretch from his usual Sandra Bullock Romantic Comedy-type movies. I think this could be the start of some starring roles in action movies, provided he can get out of his contract with the Oxygen channel.

What I'm listening to (books on tape): Pride and Prejudice - as read by Danny Glover with updated language.

While I assume that all books measure their greatness with whether they are turned into a movie, I think P&P could become quite popular by itself given a proper marketing campaign. Part of this campaign is a new "on-tape" version that has updated the language to make it more accessible to today's youth.

For example, here is an original line: Nothing is more deceitful ... than the appearance of humility. It is often only carelessness of opinion, and sometimes an indirect boast.

And the new "Glover" version: Yo nuttin' iz mo' deceitful ... than da appearance o' humility. It iz often only carelessness o' opinion, an' sometimes an indirect boast Ya' dig?

I'd like to think that Jane Austen would approve...

CJC’s First Sunday Of The Month Jam Session On April 3

April marks the second month of the CJC Summer Jazz Scholarship Program. Remember, students attending the March, April, May and June jam sessions will have a chance to win a $400 scholarship to the summer jazz camp of their choice in Iowa. (A second place winner will receive a $100 scholarship.)

Simpson College’s Dave Camwell will join us on April 3 to tell you more about the summer program at Simpson, conduct a short workshop at 1:30 p.m. and lead the jam sessions from 2 to 4 p.m.

Dave has selected the following tunes for the session:

For Beginner Players: Cantaloupe Island, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Watermelon Man

For Intermediate Players: Blue Bossa, Beautiful Love, Take The A Train, Autumn Leaves

Ogni Suono Saxophone Duo

Today at Simpson we were treated to a fantastic musical treat, the Ogni Suono Saxophone Duo of Noa Even and Phil Pierick. The Duo performed three pieces and worked with members of the studio on some extended techniques. They could not have been more gracious and are wonderful performers. Thanks again Noa and Phil!

It was an eventful few days for Oasis Quartet this past week. We played a 30 minute concerto with the CCM Wind Symphony (Colgrass' Urban Requiem) as well as a high school concert and a recital and master class at CCM. As usual it was a very enjoyable but intense time. Click here to here a clip of one of our recitals. Next up, Taiwan!

Hot Jazz in Cold Iowa

Today was a good day at the Jim Coffin Jazz Festival, held at Woodward Granger High School. I judged with my friends Jim Romain and Dave Altemeier, with clinic support from (also friends) Jim Oatts and Joel Poppen. Thanks to Bryan Lloyd for having me out to help at the festival.

Here was the schedule for our center.

coffee, food, snacks, and makes sure things run smoothly.
